Qmail Server
qmail
is a modern SMTP server which makes sendmail obsolete, written by Dan Bernstein.
qmail is a secure package. There was a $1,000.00 prize for anyone who can show
otherwise, which went unclaimed.
A number of large Internet sites are using qmail: Hotmail's
outgoing mail, USA.net's outgoing email, Rediffmail.com (3.5M users, adding
30K users/day), Satyam Infoway, Colonize.com (sending 6M opt-in emails/day),
Yahoo! mail, Network Solutions, listserv.acsu.buffalo.edu (a big listserv hub,
using qmail since 1996), Ohio State (biggest US University), XOOM.com, RIPE,
Critical Path (email outsourcing service w/ 7M mailboxes) and thousands more.
qmail is designed for high security and heavy traffic.
Sendmail has a long history of serious security problems. When Sendmail was
written, the Net was a much friendlier place. Everyone knew everyone else, and
there was little need to design and code for high security. Today's Internet
is a much more hostile environment for network servers.
